Fame and Fortune

Fame and fortune must not be all they're cracked up to be. If you read CNN, or watch Entertainment Tonight, you've already heard that Morgan Freeman was in a serious car accident today, with the car flipping several times.

According to CNN.com "Freeman was driving a 1997 Nissan Maxima". Man, talk about the life of luxury!

Weekend catch-up!

The past two or three months have been total calamity and adventure for me...I haven't had a single "sit around at home" weekend since May! I've also been busier during the week - work has been doing basketball on Tuesdays, and between the occassional squash match, dinner with peeps, hanging out with Laura's sister who is variously back in town for a few days at a time, the other days have vanished!

Last weekend we treked back to Ottawa, as my Aunt from Winnipeg and my two young cousins, Hannah and Ben were in town for the weekend seeing my mom, who'd flown back from the cottage. I haven't done the drive from Toronto -> Ottawa in quite a while, and had somewhat forgetten that yes, in fact, it DOES take a long time! We got to Ottawa around 11:30 Friday night, had a nice day on Saturday with the fam, hitting a mini-carnival at Merival Arena (I'm sure at some point this woulda been a week-making highlight reel worthy carnival as a kid, but it was a pretty weak-sauce sad affair as an adult), then did some walking around downtown near the market...and now that I'm enjoying the engaged life, I had the joy and pleasure of visiting a few custom ring / jewellery stores with LT. Sunday was a quick breakfast with Karen and the boy at a really yummy place near MEC, then off to Gatineau for a quick hike and some picture taking for virtualtrails.ca.

This week was zany, Tuesday was basketball, Wednesday was Asahi Sushi with coworkers, Thursday was squash in Burlington, Friday was dinner with Laura's parents and sister, and the weekend was spent touring Niagara. Nothing happens anymore without some alternative, wedding related reason. While the original plan was to hit Niagara for another leg of my biking, we'd have been remiss to not check out a few potential wedding venues. We looked at 3, but I don't think any will make the cut, as they all had aspects that weren't quite what we were looking for, or were too expensive, etc. The cost of some of these places is insane - $140+tax+tip = more like $180 all in, so a massive $20k for a party? Ya, more than I can really stomach.

The biking was really good - first day went from sorta Stoney Creek / Grimsby down to St Catherines, with a few side trips to look at wineries. Then Sunday was from Niagara on the Lake, down past Niagara / Niagara Falls, all the way down to Fort Erie / Lake Erie. Just around 100km all in, not bad given that we did lots of touristing! Aside: I would NOT recommend that KOA in Niagara - really expensive, and very very load / jammed / not even remotely close to a "nature" experience at all - our campsite was literally backing against the fence to someone's back yard. Oh, and right next to a train track. And umm...a really loud drunk guy who kept talking super loudly until 2am.

All in all though, a really fun weekend! I actually quite enjoyed Niagara Falls - we were there around 9am so beat the crowds.
